Show of hands – who likes going through the hiring process? No one? Makes sense. It doesn’t matter if you’re the job seeker or hiring manager – the process can be long and stressful. As an employer – the importance of finding the right fit is more crucial than ever before. Hiring the wrong person is time-consuming, expensive and can be toxic for culture. On the other hand, hiring the right employee makes a positive impact on work environment and helps accomplish challenging goals. So it’s safe to say that it’s more important than ever to bring on the right people in order to reach your lofty business goals.

Here are a handful of ways that may help you do that:

Define the Job before Hiring

It may sound simple, but an effective way to find the best candidates is to clearly define the job. What qualifications would make the best candidate? How many years of experience are you seeking? Are there any special software programs the ideal candidate should know? Clearly defining the job requirements will ensure that you are only getting candidates that have the experience and skills that you are looking for.

Plan your Recruiting Strategy

Now that the job is clearly defined, who is going to have a hand in the hiring process? Connect with the team members that will work with the new hire and create a plan of attack. The plan should include a hiring timetable, ideal candidate profile and budget. This plan will help keep your recruiting efforts on track and communicates progress to interested employees and the hiring manager.

Review Credentials Carefully

The work of reviewing resumes and cover letters is a time consuming, yet crucial step. Make sure to screen all applicants against the list of qualifications, skills, experience and characteristics you’re looking for. Effective background checks are also important. You need to verify that the candidates you’re talking to actually possess the skills on their resume.

Ask the Right Interview Questions

At some point – the candidates that stand above the rest are going to garner a job interview. The questions asked in that interview are critical to finding the right person. Interview questions can help separate average candidates from the standouts. Ask questions that are relevant to the job and candidates experience, but don’t be afraid to ask questions that require some quick, critical thinking.
